What is N-acetyl-L-cysteine?
acetylcysteine is a kind of Amino Acid, the acetylation product of L-cysteine. The study has shown that acetylcysteine is not only a mucolytic agent, but also has a variety of biological activities. Acetylcysteine is used as mucolytic agentcontains a thiol group, which can break the disulfide bond (-SS-) of the mucin peptide, so that the mucin chain becomes a small molecule peptide chain and reduces the viscosity of mucin. Acetylcysteine can break the DNA fibers in purulent sputum, dissolve white slime and purulent sputum, reduce the viscosity of sputum, and is suitable for respiratory infections characterized by excessive mucus secretions, such as acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, bronchiectasis. This product can also be used for children of acetaminophen poisoning and non-pyogenic otitis media. Acetylcysteine is a white crystalline powder, has a garlic-like and acid odor; it is hygroscopic, easily soluble in water or ethanol, and insoluble in ether and chloroform.
Function and Application
Mainly used in the field of medicine, used as phlegm dissolving drug and detoxification of acetaminophen poisoning and cosmetics.
1. Aerosol
The expectorant effect of acetylcysteine is due that the sulfhydryl group can break the disulfide bonds of mucin in sputum and reduce the viscosity of sputum. It is used for patients with acute and chronic bronchitis who have cough with phlegm and are difficult to cough.
2. Ophthalmic preparation
Acetylcysteine eye drops are suitable for the treatment of punctate keratitis, herpes simplex keratitis, cellular keratitis and alkaline chemical burns.
3. Oral preparation
The acetylcysteine oral granules and effervescent tablets listed in Italy, the acetylcysteine lozenges listed in Hong Kong and the acetylcysteine oral solution listed in the United States are used to treat respiratory infections characterized by excessive mucus secretions.
4. Injection
Acetylcysteine injection can be used for both intramuscular injection and intravenous injection. Acetylcysteine injection was not only initially used for antitussive and phlegm removal, but also the treatment of acetaminophen poisoning.
5. Cosmetics
N-acetyl-L-cysteine can scavenge oxygen free radicals, slow down aging, reduce melanin under the epidermis and eliminate existing melanin, so it is increasingly valued as a whitening Cosmetic.
